What’s The Easiest Way To Lose Weight When You Have Depression?

“Losing weight is hard, and it’s even harder to keep it off.” 

That’s the thought that permeates daily existence for many of us.


I’m going to offer you a slight perspective shift, though. 


What if it’s your thoughts about losing weight that are keeping you from losing it? 

What if it’s the way diet mentality has permeated your efforts and not your actual efforts that make you think that?

You may be asking: What’s diet mentality? It’s the deeply-ingrained thoughts and beliefs about what we need to eat or not eat, do or not do in order to lose weight. 

Take a few minutes to think about what you believe it takes to lose weight. Do you think you have to follow a certain food plan? That you must cut out entire food groups? That you have to count everything? 

There’s probably influence from your past attempts to lose weight that left some trauma behind, and that can leave you feeling stuck in the thought, “This is so hard for me.”

What if it were easy? 

Now I’m not saying it is easy, and I’m not invalidating anyone’s feelings here. What I’m asking is have you ever considered that it *could* be?

When you have depression, though? What the hell, Dana. That just makes EVERYTHING harder, not just losing weight.

Well, I’ll tell you this. When you understand how our brains work and that we can actually reprogram them, it does get easier.

Our brains are processors and can be rewired with intentional effort through practice, patience, and persistence.

Awareness is the beginning of the process. Tune into what you’re telling yourself about certain foods. What do you believe about those foods versus the fact about it?

Food is food. It’s not something we need to demonize or label as “good” or “bad.” 

But we do need to gain awareness of how we use food to soothe our emotions and how this cycle can exacerbate depression.

It also gets easier when you stop being so hard on yourself and learn how to show yourself kindness and compassion. (The black cloud of depression abates a bit when you do this, too.)
